Guest room makeover on a budget.

My husband has been on my case to get ride of my thrift store finds and other nifties that are taking up space. I believe his exact words were "use it or loose it." So when I set out to makeover this guest room I challenged myself to not spend any money on furnishings or accessories. With the exception of 1 gallon of paint and the DIY headboard I didn't spend anything. I re-purposed, re-painted, re-used things from our old home and other rooms of our current home.

Without further adieu...

Guest Room Before.

Silly me, took "before" pictures after I painted this wall brown.

Imagine the true "before's" as having a white wall.

This yellow cabinet is mine from when I was a child.

AFTER.

Those curtains are actually X-Long Twin sheets hung by ring clips.

(All "after" images from Michelle R. of Wondertime Photo. You're the best M!)

Paint: Clinton Brown by Benjamin Moore
Headboard: DIY project.
Brown Bedding: Crate and Barrel (Purchased in 2006).
Green Trellis Curtains (X-Long Sheets), pillowcases, bedskirt (DIY): HomeGoods Summer 2009. Brand: Hillcrest.
Red lamp: Thrift store DIY project.
Canvast art: DIY project.
Asian silver accesory: HomeGoods.
Side table: Repurposed and repainted from IKEA.
Side table shelf: Estate Sale.

DIY instructions next week.

Great job on the guest bedroom. I love the pictures that I am sure you painted yourself! It's a nice touch. I can't get over the trellis sheets and curtains - so cute!!!!

OH man, that is seriously amazing. You have an incredible eye and can come over to do my house anytime!

There was just a poll on Young House Love about whether you liked accent walls or not.... and this should be proof that they are great (when done correctly). The whole room in brown may have been to dark... and leaving the headboard wall white would've lost the impact of the amazing green headboard.

Amazing job, great staging. The red lamp is perfect!

Hi michelle, let me tell you that I love the guess room makeover especially the headboard, I tried to do one myself with my hubby's help but didn't come out right because we don't know anything about upholstery, so was a failed project, now I want to try it again after looking your amazing makeover, hoping that I'll get some tips from you, I'd like to know how did you stapled the fabric on the two corners where you made the cut.

Michelle (Three Men and a Lady) said...

Anonymous-
The headboard was tricky trying to do the right angle cut outs on both sides. I cut one side of the angle and stapled it down then I realized I would have to sew a flap of fabric in order to cover the other side of the angle. Confused yet? It was really a matter of trial and error. Let me know if you have other questions.

Nice to hear your successful make over story! You inspire me, man! I'm planning to do a total makeover to my room (because finally, I own my room. My sister moved in to New York last week). Honestly, I don't like the theme of our room. Very plain and I hate seeing the posters of Jonas Brother (my sister is a big fan of them, and she posts those all over our wall. Actually, it is fine for me if it is just one or two of them, but there are around 15 to 20 posters on our wall. They already look like campaign posters! I'll keep the furniture and our carpet though because they're still useful. Maybe I'll hire a service for carpet cleaning in Ottawa. My best friend advised me that carpet cleaning (Ottawa-based) is good and trustworthy. Maybe I'll paint the walls with light green paints.
